Atkins Diet Reviews

My story is very simple. I was on the Atkin's diet when it first got its start in the 70's. In two months with Atkin's and exercise, I lost 40 lbs total, and was no longer an overweight teenager. I felt wonderful and my migrain headaches along with my allergies disappeared. I kept the weight off for 5 years, until I married my, now ex-husband. He slowly talked me into eating his way so he wouldn't have to eat his way by himself. What a mistake. I gained back the weight. I then went back on the diet, and was having trouble trying to conceive my first child. I started exercising, lost 60 lbs and got pregnant. My body was healthy. While pregnant the doctor said I needed to follow a balanced diet. So, I did, per the doctor and gained 100 lbs. and developed toxemia as well.
After the birth of my first child, I couldn't diet, because of breast feeding. That 100 lbs has never left me and now I am 180 lbs overweight. I have celiac disease, and even the dermatitis herpetiformis that goes with it. I break out in blisters that itch like crazy when I eat ANYTHING with carbs or wheat in it. I have been allergic to wheat all my life. When I follow this diet, I get neither wheat nor processed sugar. It is the only diet I can follow, and so far I have lost 17 lbs. I have not been on it lately(in the last couple of weeks) and I have broken out all over again with the rash that a wheat intolerance causes. My bad cholesterol, triglycerides, blood pressure, and diabetes(I am also in the beginning stages of diabetes) all goes away when I follow the diet as directed. Thank God for Dr. Atkin's. This is a healthy diet and I don't listen to the critics out there. I intend to lose all my weight and be a walking testimony for Dr. Atkins and his diet. I did it when I was a teenager and I can do it again. Good luck to all of you and you have made the right choice to try Atkin's Diet. It is the ONLY diet that works for me. Debra

I am starting Atkins again for the second time. About 9 years ago I watched my grandmother (more like a mother- she raised me) suffer with diabetes until one day she never left the hospital. I had started Atkins a few weeks before her last trip to the hospital and asked her Dr., "Can you please affirm that Atkins is okay for me to be doing and that I should stop listening to the negativity about the program." He said, "If your grandmother had lived an "Atkins" lifestyle, she would not be laying in that bed today." That was all I needed to hear to continue with my journey. However, I met the man of my dreams and we now have 2 beautiful children and a loving home! Somewhere in between all that, I have been on a yo-yo weight loss spiral. So I am going back to Atkins because I know my body type, I know I am sensitive to simple carbs and sugar and I need to be happy and healthy again. Atkins gets waaaaay to much heat and rather than defend the program, I intend to be a walking model for Atkins! Nobody can tell you what you should and should not do when it comes to your body and health. If something has changed your life for the better, made you healthy and alive again, than NOBODY has the right to tell you you're wrong!

Atkins is not just about the induction phase, which is what everyone seems to dump on. In fact most programs require you purge your body of sugar and carbohydrates during the first 2 or three weeks. Why, because it's addictive and slowly killing us! Unlike other addictions that you can just cut cold turkey, you cannot just CUT out all foods, but you can cut out the ones that are killing you! Processed JUNK! The induction phase is meant to cleanse your pallet and prepare your body for healthy living. Fruits, veggies, proteins and fats; isn't that what God put on the earth for us to catch, fetch, and grow??? With Atkins you will eventually be able to add all those healthy foods back into your diet, but an addict must start somewhere. And speaking from experience, if you are 50+ pounds overweight, it's time to face the facts... YOU ARE a food addict!

In every attempt to get healthy, making sure your head is in the right place has to be priority or the weight will come back on no matter "what" plan you do! Cut those nasty sugars and processed junk that comfort you so much and find better ways to deal with your stress, fears, joys, etc.!!! Easier said than done, I am no exception.

***Bottom line, Atkins is not only about the induction phase. Before criticizing the program, make sure to get all the facts! Atkins is purging the body of toxins and addictions, to prepare you for a healthier lifestyle!

Good luck

I was living Atkins way several years ago and lost 85 lbs. and improved all my tests especially blood sugar numbers. After my family and many friends kept pressuring me to stop eating this way, I then began trying different diets including one from my diabetes nutritionist on which - long story short - I have finally regained all the weight I lost plus some. I have returned to the Atkins way of eating and I have made it VERY clear I will not listen to any of them in this area again. I feel so much better by limiting those carb numbers. In Induction I am losing a pound a day. While this may not work for everyone it is the only way I can eat and feel good. Dr. Atkins knew what he was talking about.
